Is addiction just a way to avoid something deeper?

Lately I’ve been reflecting and starting to wonder if my addiction was more about avoiding grief than anything else. I lost someone close before everything spiraled. Has anyone else made this connection before? Is there a link between loss and addiction patterns?

It’s more common than we think — using substances to numb something deeper, especially grief, isn’t unusual. In fact, recognizing this connection is a huge step toward healing. When I started therapy, my counselor pointed out that a lot of my habits weren’t just about the substance, but about avoiding emotional pain. This article opened my eyes about addiction as grief avoidance: https://unitedrecoveryproject.com/rehab-blog/addiction-as-grief-avoidance/. It really validated what I was feeling but couldn’t articulate. Understanding that helped me be less ashamed and more open to healing. I started journaling about the person I lost and allowing myself to really grieve. That’s when the urge to use started fading — not overnight, but slowly, as the grief had somewhere to go. Don’t ignore this instinct to explore deeper. It matters.
