  Before my trip, I imagined Japan to be quite noisy and crowded, but in reality, things weren't so straightforward. As soon as you turn off the main streets, you immediately find yourself in quiet neighborhoods where there are almost no people, and you just want to wander aimlessly. Several times, I went for a stroll like this and ended up finding small temples or courtyards that weren't even on my agenda. However, I then had to figure out how to get back to the subway, as it's difficult to navigate without a map.
